Naming and Significance of AC Disc Suspension Insulators (Porcelain, Glass, or Composite Porcelain/Glass)
1. Naming and significance of national standards
The current national standard for AC disc-shaped suspension insulators (porcelain, glass, composite porcelain or glass) adopts the "Insulators for Overhead Lines with a nominal voltage higher than 1000V - Porcelain or glass Insulators for AC Systems" (GB/T 7253-2005). The naming convention and significance of this standard are as follows:

▲ National standard naming for disc-shaped suspended porcelain or glass insulators
The above refers to Appendix A of "Ceramic or Glass Insulators for AC Systems of Overhead Line Insulators with a nominal voltage higher than 1000V" (GB/T 7253-2005).
U - Refers to disc-shaped suspension insulators used in AC systems, which may be made of porcelain, glass, or disc-shaped suspension ceramic composite insulators or disc-shaped suspension glass composite insulators;
70- represents a mechanical or electrical failure load of 70kN;
B - The connection method is ball and socket connection;
L - Long structural height.
Therefore, U70BL represents a disc-shaped suspension insulator for AC systems with a mechanical and electrical failure load of 70kN and a ball and socket connection with a long structural height.
The specific material cannot be determined in the model, please refer to the insulator instructions for the material.
Before GB/T 7253-2005, the naming of insulators was based on JB 9681-1999, and some units still use this model.

▲ Method for representing old models of disc-shaped suspension porcelain or glass insulators
Example:
X - represents a disc-shaped suspended ceramic insulator;
WP - double-layer umbrella pollution resistant insulator;
2- represents the design serial number;
100- represents a mechanical or electrical failure load of 100kN.
Therefore, XWP2-100 represents a disc-shaped suspension ceramic insulator for a double-layer umbrella pollution resistant type 2 AC system with a mechanical or electrical failure load of 100kN.
LX - represents a disc-shaped suspended glass insulator;
P - Ordinary insulator;
1- represents the design serial number;
100- represents a mechanical or electrical failure load of 100kN.
LXP1-100 represents a mechanical or electrical failure load of 100kN, and is a disc-shaped suspension glass insulator used in ordinary Type 1 AC systems.
2.Naming and significance of power industry standards
The current AC disc-shaped suspension insulators (porcelain, glass, composite porcelain or glass), according to relevant power industry standards, the editor has not yet found the naming method of porcelain and glass insulators, only the relevant regulations for the naming method of composite porcelain or glass insulators, which is "Disconnected Composite Porcelain or Glass Insulator String Components for AC Systems" (DL/T 1470-2015). The naming convention and significance of this standard for composite ceramics or glass edges are as follows:

▲Naming and significance of power industry standards
The communication disc-shaped suspended composite ceramic or glass insulator refers to a ceramic or glass insulator with ceramic or glass as the inner insulation (as shown in the diagram in the overview), high-temperature vulcanized silicone rubber umbrella cover material as the outer insulation, and fully covering the ceramic or glass insulator.
Note: According to the bonding form between ceramic or glass parts and composite materials, there are usually two types:
1) Class A, consisting of porcelain or glass core discs, high-temperature bowl shaped silicone rubber umbrella covers, and metal accessories:
2) Class B, consisting of disc-shaped suspended porcelain or glass insulators and high-temperature vulcanized silicone rubber umbrella cover materials.
As with the national standard, it is impossible to determine the specific material from the previous model, and the material also needs to be checked according to the insulator specifications.
Example:
F - indicates that the insulator material is made of silicone rubber composite material;
U - represents a disc-shaped suspension insulator used in AC systems;
70- represents a mechanical or electrical failure load of 70kN;
B - indicates that the connection method is ball and socket connection;
146- indicates that the nominal structural height of the insulator is 146mm;
M - represents aerodynamic type insulator;
A - Refers to Class A insulators, which are composed of porcelain or glass core discs, high-temperature bowl shaped silicone rubber umbrella covers, and metal accessories.
Therefore, FU70B/146MA represents an aerodynamic type, electromechanical (mechanical) failure load of 70kN, ball and socket connection, nominal structural height of 146mm, AC disc-shaped suspension composite ceramic or glass insulator composed of ceramic or glass core disc, high-temperature bowl shaped silicone rubber umbrella sleeve, and metal accessories. The specific material cannot be determined in the model, please refer to the insulator instructions for the material.
Example:
1) FU160BP/155TB
F - indicates that the insulator material is made of silicone rubber composite material;
U - represents a disc-shaped suspension insulator used in AC systems;
160- represents a mechanical or electrical failure load of 100kN;
B - indicates that the connection method is ball and socket connection;
P - represents anti fouling type insulator;
155- indicates that the nominal structural height of the insulator is 155mm;
T - represents a three-layer umbrella insulator;
B - Refers to Class B insulators, which are composed of disc-shaped suspension porcelain or glass insulators and high-temperature vulcanized silicone rubber umbrella materials.
Therefore, FU160BP/155TB refers to a three-layer umbrella type and anti fouling type, with a mechanical and electrical (mechanical) failure load of 160kN, a ball and socket connection, a nominal structural height of 155mm, and an AC disc-shaped suspension composite ceramic or glass insulator composed of disc-shaped suspension ceramic or glass insulators and high-temperature vulcanized silicone rubber umbrella sleeve materials. The specific material cannot be determined in the model, please refer to the insulator instructions for the material.
3.Naming and Significance of Mechanical Power Industry Standards
The current mechanical industry standard for AC disc-shaped suspension insulators (porcelain, glass, composite porcelain or glass) adopts the "Ceramic or Glass Insulators for AC Systems of Overhead Line Insulators with a nominal voltage higher than 1000V" (JB/T 9683-2012). The naming convention and significance of this standard are as follows:
▲ Naming of row labels for disc-shaped suspended porcelain or glass insulators
Type code:
U - disc-shaped suspension ceramic insulator string components for communication systems
UD - disc-shaped suspension ceramic insulator string components for DC systems
UG - disc-shaped suspension glass insulator string components for communication systems
UDG - disc-shaped suspension glass insulator string components for DC systems
UC - disc-shaped suspended ceramic composite insulator string components for communication systems
UDC - disc-shaped suspension ceramic composite insulator string components for DC systems
UGC - Disk shaped suspension glass composite insulator string components for communication systems
UDGC - Disk shaped suspension glass composite insulator string components for DC systems
Connection type of metal accessories:
B - Ball joint ball socket connection
C - Slot shaped connection
Umbrella structure:
N - Standard Umbrella Type
D - Double Umbrella Type
T - Umbrella type
H - Bell shaped Umbrella
A - Aerodynamic Umbrella Type (Open Umbrella Type)
R - Other umbrella types
Connection marker:
XR - Connection mark XR type locking pin
XW - Connection mark XW type locking pin
The above refers to Article 5.1 of "Ceramic or Glass Insulators for AC Systems of Overhead Line Insulators with a nominal voltage higher than 1000V" (JB/T 9683-2012). It should be noted that this differs from the expression of structural height and creepage distance parameters in GB/T 7253-2005. In addition, the power industry standard is represented by M, while the mechanical industry standard is represented by A. In their standards, M is generally used, and in actual engineering, small editors also use M more frequently.
Example:
U - stands for disc-shaped suspension ceramic insulator used in communication systems;
160- Mechanical and electrical failure load of 160kN;
B - Ball head and socket connection method;
170- Structural height grade 170mm;
525- nominal creepage distance 525mm;
D - Double umbrella insulator;
20- Connection marker 20;
R-type locking pin;
04- Design Number 04.
Therefore, U160B170/525D20R-04 represents a disc-shaped suspension ceramic insulator string component for AC systems, with a mechanical and electrical failure load of 160kN, ball and socket connection method, structural height level of 170mm, nominal creepage distance of 525mm, double umbrella type, connection mark of 20, R-type locking pin, and design number 04.
4.Standard Naming and Significance of State Grid Enterprises
The standard distribution of porcelain and glass enterprises in the current AC disc-shaped suspension insulators (porcelain, glass, composite porcelain or glass) adopts the "Procurement Standard for 10kV~1000kV AC disc-shaped suspension porcelain or glass insulators Part 2: Technical Specification for Porcelain Insulators" (Q/GDW 13251.2-2014) and the "Procurement Standard for 10kV~1000kV AC disc-shaped suspension porcelain or glass insulators Part 3: Technical Specification for Glass Insulators" (Q/GDW 13251.3-2014). The naming and meaning of porcelain and glass in the standard are the same, and their naming methods and meanings are as follows:

▲ Naming of disc-shaped suspended porcelain or glass insulators according to State Grid standards
There are differences between its aerodynamic type and JB/T 9683-2012. The State Grid enterprise standard is represented by M, which is the same as the power industry standard. The mechanical industry standard is represented by A, and M is generally used in other standards. In actual engineering, small editors also use M more often.
Example:
a) U70B/146:
U - Suspended, 70kN;
B - Ball and socket type connection, standard type;
146- Structural height of 146mm.
b) U120BP/146D:
U - Suspended, 120kN;
B - Ball and socket type connection;
P - anti fog type;
146- Structural height of 146mm;
D - Double layered umbrella shaped.
c) U160BP/170T:
U - Suspended, 160kN;
B - Ball and socket type connection;
P - anti fog type;
170- Structural height 170mm;
T-three-layer umbrella shaped structure.
d) U70C (N):
Ground wire insulator, U-shaped suspension, 70kN;
C-groove connection;
N - Tensile type.
The standard for composite porcelain or glass insulators adopted by State Grid Corporation of China adopts the naming method and meaning of "Disk shaped Suspended Composite Porcelain or Glass Insulator Components for AC Systems" (Q/GDW 1167-2014), which is also the same as the standard for the power industry.
There is no clear regulation on the naming of insulators in the standard technical tender for AC glass insulators of Southern Power Grid. Based on my personal interpretation of the technical parameters of insulators in the standard technical tender for AC glass insulators (without guaranteeing their correctness), the naming and meaning of the ordinary and pollution resistant types of single umbrella are basically consistent with the national standard GB/T 7253, and the double umbrella, three umbrella, and aerodynamic types are basically consistent with the enterprise standards of State Grid.
